When you are hiring, what are you looking for in a candidate?

We’re looking for experience with nonprofits, and experience with the platforms we use at the scale at which we generally work. Experience working at another agency or consultancy is helpful, but not required.

Why is nonprofit experience important?

It’s not enough for us to be technically excellent; we need to build the right things and then help people use them. That means we need to understand the context in which they’re used, and communicate clearly and proactively with the folks we support. A background in nonprofit work is a helpful starting point.

What are the platforms you use?

Take a look around the site to get a sense of the breadth of platforms (Salesforce, WordPress, Drupal, and lots more). We work on most nonprofit CRM platforms, and we do a lot of Linux systems administration and DevOps as well. Our developers’ work is often highly technical and based in code, while our project managers and strategists work through the user interface of various CMS platforms, CRMs, and of course through meetings, trainings, and documentation.

What if I don’t have experience with nonprofits or with the technology you use, but I’m just generally Good At Things?

Being Good At Things is crucial here, because there’s a lot to learn about a lot of different projects! However, the best way for us to get a sense that you’ll be able to help our clients would be for you to get some real-world experience with nonprofits. If you can find a nonprofit with a cause you care about and find a way to contribute directly, either as a volunteer or a consultant, you’ll learn a lot about whether or not you enjoy this work.
